Health benefits of broccoli seeds for sprouting
Broccoli sprouts’ slightly spicy flavor comes from the rich phytochemical content of the young plant in the first three or four days after sprouting. This phytochemical helps to protect the plant and can also work as an antioxidant in humans, and these tasty baby plants are also packed full of vitamins such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C, as well as other nutrients.
Some studies have indicated that broccoli sprouts can help rid the body because they contain a substance called sulforaphane, which helps rid the body of cancer-causing chemicals. In fact, tiny broccoli sprouts contain 50 times more sulforaphane than fresh broccoli! Broccoli sprouts may also help reduce inflammation of the stomach, making them good for your health in many ways.
How to use and enjoy broccoli seeds
To grow your own nutritious sprouts, use a plastic or glass container that you can sterilize. Start with about three tablespoons of organic broccoli seeds and soak them for 24 hours to clean them and get them prepared for germination.
You can sprout seeds with or without soil. To grow them without soil, place damp paper towels in the bottom of your sterilized container, sprinkle the seeds on it and leave them uncovered. Cover the container with plastic wrap and poke air holes in it. Keep your container in a place that is at least 70 degrees, but out of direct sunlight. Harvest the seeds two or three days after they start to develop leaves, and rinse them to remove the seed hulls.
After you harvest them, you can enjoy your broccoli sprouts right away in salads, on sandwiches, in soups or sprout loaves, and in other fresh and healthy snacks. You can keep them for a couple of days in the fridge — simply rinse and pat dry to reconstitute the sprouts.
