Hulled Barley by Food to Live is a whole grain, with the indigestible outer husk removed. It differs from Pearl Barley, which, in turn, is produced by removing the bran from Hulled Barley. This step makes Pearl Barley cook quicker, while also strips it of some nutritional value, particularly – dietary fiber.

Nutritional Value of Hulled Barley

Whole Grain Barley provides a host of vital minerals and vitamins, including Vitamins A and E, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Calcium. It also contains high levels of Manganese, Selenium, Niacin, Folate, and Copper. Not to mention, it is rich in fiber, low in fat, and is cholesterol -free. In a nutshell, Hulled Barley grains may improve digestion, and help regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Culinary Uses of Hulled Barley

Once cooked, Hulled Barley obtains a slightly chewy texture along with a nutty flavor. It can be a delicious and versatile base for stir-fries, morning porridge, casseroles, and protein bowls. Add it to your salads, and soups, or use instead of rice in risotto and pilaf recipes. You can also use barley for baking pancakes and scones, simply by milling whole grains into flour. Moreover, its high potential for enzyme conversion allows to use Hulled Barley for brewing your own beer. This process is called malting. To “malt” barley, soak it multiple times and then heat-dry just instantly after the germination starts. FYI, malted grains can be used also for whiskey, candies, milkshakes, and vinegar.

Cooking Instructions

Stovetop method:

1. Place Hulled Barley and water in the medium saucepan in a ratio of 1:3. Add a pinch of salt.

2. Bring to a boil over high heat.

3. Simmer over low heat until water is soaked up and the barley is tender with a a chewy texture (about 45 – 50 minutes).

Instant pot:

1. Combine 1 cup of Hulled Barley, 3 cups of water, salt, and little oil in the instant pot.

2. Close the lid and set manual pressure to high for 25-30 minutes.
