Hazelnuts, also known as filberts, originated in Turkey and the South of Europe, but nowadays, they are cultivated in many countries. This type of nuts is exceptionally delicious and makes an excellent snack. Hazelnuts are mostly used in confectioneries, but there are quite a few recipes of delicious hazel sauces and other dishes.

The best thing about these nuts is the fact that even despite their high calories count you can include them in a weight loss diet. They contain “good” fats, so they don’t affect your figure.

Health Benefits

Hazelnuts are a kind of nut, which means that eating them must be good for your health in some way. Their most important benefits are:

  • They are rich in mono-unsaturated fats.
People need to consume some amount of fats to stay healthy, but not all fats are equally suitable for you. Mono-unsaturated fats are the safest option because they help to lower the level of “bad” LDL cholesterol. This promotes your cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease.
  • They are packed with folate.
Hazelnuts are the best source of this particular element among nuts. 100 grams of them will provide you with a quarter of the required daily dose of it. Folate is one of the B-complex vitamins, which plays an essential part in many processes within your body. It helps prevent tube defects in newborns as well as reduces the risk of megaloblastic anemia. Every pregnant woman has to increase her intake of folate.
  • They are a good source of vitamin E.
This particular vitamin is a potent antioxidant. It also has a substantial effect on your appearance as it can help strengthen your hair and nails by keeping them hydrated.
  • They are free of gluten.
Therefore, they are safe for those who are allergic to gluten or have celiac disease.
  • They are full of minerals.
Hazelnuts are packed with manganese and copper. Both of them are essential minerals and potent antioxidants.

Roasted Hazelnut Milk & Hazelnut Hot Cocoa

Roasted Hazelnut Milk & Hazelnut Hot Cocoa

Serves: Makes about 4 cups

INGREDIENTS

For the hazelnut milk:

  • 2 cups roasted and skinned hazelnuts*
  • 4 cups water, plus more as needed
  • small pinch of salt
  • ½ vanilla bean (or ½ tsp. pure vanilla extract), optional
  • 2-3 tsp. pure maple syrup, honey, a few pitted dates, or other sweetener, optional

For the hazelnut hot cocoa:

  • 3-4 oz. good quality dark chocolate, or vegan chocolate, chopped
  • 2 cups hazelnut milk
  • Optional: fresh whipped cream, or coconut cream, for serving

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add the hazelnuts, water, and salt, and the vanilla (if using), to your blender. Optionally, you can add in a little maple syrup or other sweetener (if you’re using dates, you need to add them now — otherwise, if you’re using a liquid sweetener, you can hold off until the nut milk is finished and add a little to taste).
  2. Blend thoroughly until the liquid is thick and cloudy, and the hazelnuts are very finely ground, about 1-2 minutes (you may require more or less time depending on your blender). Let the mixture steep for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Place a large nut milk bag, or a few layers of cheesecloth over a colander, over a large bowl, and slowly pour the milk mixture into the center of it. If you’re using cheesecloth, or a smaller nut milk bag, you may have to do this in batches. Pull up the sides of the bag or cheesecloth to form a pouch, and lift it above the bowl to allow the milk to drain through. Squeeze the bottom and sides of the bag or cheesecloth to extract all the liquid you can. Continue until all of the milk has been thoroughly strained. (Set the solids aside, but do not discard them. See recipe notes for tips on how to use the nut solids.)
  4. Taste the milk, and add any liquid sweeteners you’d like if you feel the milk needs it (I used a couple tsp. maple syrup and found that to be perfect for my taste, but you can adjust accordingly). If you feel the milk is too creamy or rich for you, simply add additional water to thin it down.
  5. Transfer to a jar or other airtight container, and store in the fridge. Milk should last for 4-5 days. (The milk will separate after a few hours, but that’s completely normal. Just give it a good shake before using.)
  6. Drink it straight, pour it over cereal, add it to your tea or coffee, or make luscious hazelnut hot cocoas with it.

For the hazelnut hot cocoa:

In a small saucepan, heat 2 cups of hazelnut milk until bubbles start to appear around the edges of the pan. Remove from the heat, and add the chocolate. Stir until completely melted, and serve immediately. (Or, let cool, then refrigerate for chocolate milk.) Top with fresh whipped cream, or coconut whipped cream, if you like.

Enjoy it!

Great price and great quality. I’ve gotten bulk hazelnuts online before and was nervous because they weren’t really up to snuff. But having bought other nuts from Fiod To Live and been happy with them I thought I did give these a try. They were really fresh, and very tasty. I’ll be buying these regularly now.

Pretty good raw hazel nuts it will never replace the one I use to get Turkey when it was the season but that is to be expected since these have longer life span.

These nuts are nice and large and the flavor is good, but they taste a little stale. The expiration date still has a year to go, so maybe the stale taste comes from the plastic bag? I’m going to air them out, then store in a glass jar. I would buy them again.

Nuts received timely. Tried to make a nut butter with them. They were a little difficult batch otherwise I’d give 5 stars. Would definitely order again. Good price and quick delivery.

  7. 5 out of 5 Great hazelnuts

These nuts are fresh and delicious. I lightly roast them. I made hazelnut butter with these nuts and they are excellent. I also eat them as a snack. I bought the hazelnuts from another seller through Amazon and the quality is not very good. Going forward, I will buy only Food To Live nuts/seeds going forward.

The nuts arrived quickly and were packaged well. I soaked them in salted water for a day and then dehydrated them. They taste great. Thanks!
